New Year, New Wheels: Start Driving Lessons in Ireland This January
Glen, Flexidrive's Head of Instructors, on why January is one of the best times of year to start driving lessons in Ireland and how to turn the new year motivation into actual progress.
Why January Is a Good Time to Start
January might not sound like obvious driving weather. But from a scheduling perspective, it's one of the smartest times to begin.
Demand for test appointments is lower in January and February than during the summer. Start now and by the time you've completed your EDT and are ready to test, you'll be booking ahead of the peak summer rush rather than into it.
The Timeline Works in Your Favour
The standard learner permit requires six months before you can sit the driving test. Start in January, get your permit, begin EDT, and by midsummer you'll be at or close to test-ready.
Compare that with starting in June: by the time you're ready, you're booking test appointments in the autumn when demand is still high from the summer wave of learners.
Getting in early gives you options.
Making the Resolution Count
Getting your licence is one of those things people put on the list every year and keep deferring. The difference between this January and last January isn't motivation. It's action.
Booking your first lesson is the step that makes it real. Everything else follows from there.
What You Need Before Your First Lesson
Before you can book a driving lesson, you need a valid Irish learner permit. To get one, pass the Irish theory test and apply through the NDLS with proof of identity, address, and an eyesight report.
If you don't have your permit yet, start there. The theory test is the first step.
A Realistic January Timeline
A realistic goal for someone starting in January:
January to February: Get your theory test pass and apply for your learner permit.
February to May: Complete EDT at one to two lessons per week, with private practice in between.
June onwards: Book your test and sit it from a position of genuine readiness.
That's achievable for most people who start now and stay consistent.
Private Practice in Winter
One thing that surprises learners who start in January: winter driving is actually good training. Rain, low visibility, reduced grip. These are conditions you'll face as a driver, and learning to handle them early is valuable.
Start in areas you know and on roads you're comfortable with. Build experience gradually, as you would in any season.
