Booking Your First Driving Lesson: A Step-by-Step Guide
Glen, Flexidrive's Head of Instructors, walks through exactly what you need to do before you can book your first lesson, what to expect when you get there, and how to make the most of it.
Step One: Get Your Learner Permit First
You can't have a driving lesson on public roads without a valid learner permit. That's the legal requirement. So before anything else, you need to apply for one.
To get a learner permit you need to: pass the Irish theory test, apply through the NDLS (National Driver Licence Service), provide proof of identity and address, provide an eyesight report, and pay the application fee.
Once you have your permit, you're ready to book.
Step Two: Choose Your Instructor
On Flexidrive, you can browse instructors by area and see their live availability. Choose someone who operates near you and whose schedule works with yours.
All Flexidrive instructors are RSA-registered ADIs, so you don't need to worry about qualifications. Focus on location, availability, and who you'd feel comfortable learning with.
Step Three: Book and Pay Online
Once you've chosen your instructor, pick a time slot that works, pay online, and you're confirmed. No phone calls, no waiting for a callback.
You'll get confirmation immediately. That's it.
What to Expect at Your First Lesson
Your first lesson is EDT Lesson 1. It covers the basics: getting familiar with the car controls, cockpit drill, moving off, and stopping. You won't be expected to know anything going in.
Wear comfortable, flat footwear. Bring your learner permit. That's all you need.
Your instructor will walk you through everything else. Don't worry about getting things wrong. That's exactly what lessons are for.
Common Questions About Your First Lesson
Do I need my own car?
No. Your instructor brings the car. All Flexidrive instructors use dual-control vehicles.
How often should I book?
One to two lessons per week is a good pace for most learners. More than that without private practice in between and you risk not consolidating what you're learning.
How many lessons will I need overall?
The legal minimum is 12 EDT lessons. Most learners need additional lessons beyond that to reach test standard, depending on how much private practice they do in between.
