Hiring a Car for Your Driving Test in Dublin: Everything You Need to Know

Unlike some other countries, Ireland does not have a car hire model specifically for RSA driving tests. You cannot walk into a hire company, pick up a car, and drive it to the Finglas or Raheny test centre for your test.

What Dublin learners do instead falls into three categories: their own car, a car belonging to a family member or friend, or their instructor's car. The vast majority use their instructor's car, and there is a clear reason for that.

If you own a car and are insured to drive it, you can use it for your test. The car must pass the RSA's pre-test checks on the day. That means valid tax, valid NCT if the car is four years old or older, valid insurance covering you as the driver, no warning lights, legal tyres, working lights and indicators, topped-up fluids, and an L plate displayed.

The tester walks around the car before you drive anywhere. If anything on that list is not in order, the test does not start and you lose the slot.

"If they're using their own car, they've got to make sure everything's in order. Their tax, the NCT, make sure the discs are authentic and they're on the car. Make sure the tyres are all legal. Make sure there are no warning lights on whatsoever in the car. Make sure the water is topped up. Check all the lights — brake lights and indicators. That needs to be done the day before the test and the morning of it."

You can use someone else's car, provided you are insured to drive it. You will sign a declaration at the test centre confirming you are covered. The same RSA checklist applies. It is your responsibility to make sure the car is in order, not the owner's.

The risk with this option: you may not have driven that car recently, or at all. An unfamiliar car on test day adds a variable you do not need. The biting point is different. The steering feel is different. The mirrors need adjusting. All of this takes mental bandwidth that could be going toward the drive itself.

If you have completed all your EDT lessons in your instructor's car, you know exactly how it feels. The biting point, the steering response, the blind spot positions. There are no surprises on the morning of the test. You arrive, do the checks with the tester, and drive in a car you know.

Your instructor is also responsible for making sure the car meets every RSA requirement. Tax, NCT, lights, tyres. That is their vehicle and their livelihood. It is always in order.
