How to Know You're Ready to Book Your Driving Test in Ireland
Glen, Flexidrive's Head of Instructors, explains what test readiness actually looks like and why booking too early is one of the most common and expensive mistakes learners make.
The Honest Measure of Test Readiness
A lot of learners ask me when they're ready to book their test. Some ask after lesson 8. Some ask after lesson 12. The honest answer is: when you can drive a challenging route independently, without any input from me, and do it safely and consistently.
"The easiest way to judge if someone is test ready is to get them to drive a route of various different junctions, roundabouts, different levels of difficulty without helping them. Drive it independently and see if they're able to do it in a safe and proper manner."
If you still need prompting at junctions, reminders to check mirrors, or guidance on your speed, you're not there yet. That's fine. It just means you need more time.
What Lesson 12 Is Really For
The final EDT lesson is a pre-test assessment, not a lesson in the traditional sense. Your instructor takes you out on a route with mixed conditions and doesn't help you. The goal is to see what you look like when you're driving completely independently.
If you can drive the route safely without prompts, you're ready. If you need input along the way, you're not. Your instructor should tell you the honest answer at the end of that lesson.
"If a student goes out on a test and comes back and doesn't pass and they don't understand why, that means I haven't done my job right."
A good instructor won't send you to the test before you're ready. Listen to their assessment of lesson 12.
The Role of Mock Tests
One of the strongest indicators of readiness is how you perform under mock test conditions. Not a relaxed practice drive, but a full simulation with no prompts, on a challenging route, with your instructor observing rather than guiding.
"The most common mistake for someone preparing is, once they've got themselves to a good level, they're not considering how to perform under pressure. They're better off doing a few mock tests, not just one, a few, on different routes."
If you can consistently pass mock tests on different routes without needing guidance, you're ready. If mock tests expose gaps, work on those gaps before booking.
Can You Spot and Correct Your Own Mistakes?
This is the other test of readiness that I use. Can you identify when something went wrong and correct it without being told?
"A learner needs to be able to spot their own mistakes and be able to correct them."
A learner who knows what they did wrong after a junction is much better placed for the test than one who has no idea. The examiner isn't there to help you. You need to be managing your own driving.
Signs You're Not Quite Ready
A few honest signals that more preparation is needed before booking.
You still rely on your instructor for prompts at junctions or roundabouts. Your driving changes significantly when someone is watching you. You've only done one or two mock tests, or done them on the same route. You know theoretically what to do but you're not doing it consistently in practice.
None of these mean you'll never be ready. They just mean you're not ready yet. More practice fixes all of them.
The Six-Month Rule
Before you can book your driving test, your learner permit must be at least six months old. This is an RSA requirement. The only exception is if you're on Reduced EDT as a foreign licence holder, in which case the waiting period is waived.
Check your permit date before planning your test timeline. If you're close to the six-month mark, use that time for as much private practice as possible.
FAQs
Can I book my test as soon as I finish my 12 EDT lessons?
Yes, as long as your learner permit is at least six months old. But you should only book when you and your instructor both agree you're genuinely ready.
What if my instructor says I'm not ready after lesson 12?
Listen to them. Book additional lessons and address the specific gaps they identify. Sitting the test before you're ready costs money and time.
How do I book the test?
Through the RSA website. You'll need your learner permit number and your EDT record must show all 12 lessons completed.
