Why March Is the Smartest Month to Start Driving Lessons in Ireland
Glen, Flexidrive's Head of Instructors, on why March is one of the most strategically sound times of year to begin your EDT, and how starting now sets you up to test in the best window.
The Strategic Case for March
March sits in a sweet spot in the Irish driving calendar. The worst of the winter weather is behind you. The peak summer demand for test appointments hasn't hit yet. And if you start lessons now, the six-month learner permit clock means you'll be eligible to test from September onwards.
That's a good window. Test appointment availability tends to ease in autumn after the summer rush, and you'll be going into a test cycle with well-consolidated practice behind you.
Starting Before the Summer Rush
Learners who start in May or June find themselves completing EDT just as test appointment slots are filling up with the summer wave. They're ready to test but waiting months for an appointment.
Starting in March means you're ahead of that wave. By the time summer hits, you'll have most of your EDT behind you and be practising consistently toward test standard rather than just beginning.
Weather and Conditions in March
March weather in Ireland is variable, but that's useful for learning. You'll encounter rain, dry days, mixed conditions. Learning to drive in variable weather builds better habits than starting in perfect summer conditions and only encountering rain on test day.
Variable conditions early in your learning builds adaptability. That's worth something.
What to Do If You're Starting in March
If you don't have your learner permit yet, start there. Pass the theory test, apply through the NDLS, and get your permit issued as early in March as possible.
Once you have your permit, book your first lesson. Aim for one to two lessons per week and practise in between. By June you'll have most of your EDT completed. By July or August, with consistent private practice, many learners are approaching test standard.
FAQs
Can I book my driving test before finishing EDT?
Yes. You can book a test appointment in advance and complete your EDT before the date. Many learners book early to secure a slot and keep practising until the appointment.
How quickly can I get a learner permit in March?
Processing times vary. Apply as soon as you have your theory test pass certificate. Check the NDLS website for current processing timeframes.
